When we are parents, we wish the best for her baby! When the time comes to choose the best baby mattress on which, day and night, baby will sleep on average 16 hours a day, you wonder and it is natural. How to combine comfort, safety, hygiene and well-being, while taking account of budget constraints?
A crib mattress for perfectly secure sleeping
This first point is essential. It is important to select a crib mattress on which to sleep and move safely. This means, first of all, a suitable mattress for the bed and not a mattress too small to prevent the baby from slipping or getting caught in the gap between the bed and the bed structure. The conventional dimensions for a crib mattress are 60x120cm or 70x140cm for a cot, and 33x72cm for a crib.
The thickness should be between 12 and 15 cm according to NF safety standards. And the mattress must also meet the fire protection standard EN 597-1.
What density for comfortable crib mattress
The density of the crib mattress is decisive. It is independent of the thickness of the latter (one often makes the amalgam). Choosing a crib mattress with a correct density, not too large (too much firmness could impair the comfort of the tiny one) or too weak (too soft, the mattress would no longer play its supporting role, would eventually collapse and would constitute even a danger). In general, a density of 20 kg / m3 to 22 kg / m3 is recommended for a baby mattress.
What material for healthy beddings
At a time when more and more children are experiencing allergies and respiratory problems. It seems wise to think about the sanitary aspect of the crib mattress. And a healthy mattress is a mattress made from natural materials, free of toxic products.
Concerning the materials which constitute the lining and the ticking (surface coating) of the mattress, the choice is vast!
Foam crib mattress (polyester, polyurethane or viscoelastic
The foam crib mattresses are reputed to be comfortable, with an important shape memory, and very resistant. They have undergone anti-bacterial and antifungal, non-harmful treatments. They often offer good value for money and are also easy to handle because they are light enough.
Prefer natural latex to synthetic latex. The latex is interesting for its thermoregulatory properties. In addition, it prevents allergies by preventing bacteriological development. It usually brings suppleness and a comfortable hold.
Natural and recyclable, it is also thermoregulatory and very insulating. It is a warm, pleasant envelope for the baby.
The fiber of coco
Coconut fiber is probably the most environmentally friendly and breathable material for baby bedding. It is also known for its hypoallergenic qualities.
Made from wood pulp (eucalyptus), tencel is a healthy, high absorbency material (ideal for a sweating baby).
Ticking is often made of bamboo viscose, known for its properties Antibacterial and absorbent. The sweat is, as for tencel, easily evacuated and the bamboo brings a special softness to the bed. Rare are the crib mattresses made up of only one of these materials. More often than not, there is a combination of these which confers on the product an association of qualities of their own. For example latex will bring the flexibility and coconut fiber a good air circulation inside the same mattress.
Some additional tips
There are several types of crib mattresses on the market adapted to the needs of parents: so-called inflatable, foldable and travel mattresses.
It should be noted that the life expectancy of a child mattress is 3 to 5 years, so it is better to buy a new mattress for your baby.
You will understand, the choice of the baby mattress is always important and it depends on multiple factors, but many possibilities open to you!
