Sweet: A Literary Confection

I love ideas that blend two of my favorite passions—writing and eating. Food blogs are a perfect example of this amalgamation, which is why I started flavor a deux. I am, however, first and foremost a writer of “literary styles.” Which is to say I write fiction of the non-genre type, as well as creative non-fiction, or personal essays, if you prefer. I used to write poetry as well, but gave that up several years ago, when I realized I no longer had the voice for it. What does all that have to do with anything? Enter Sweet: A Literary Confection. What is Sweet? It’s an online literary magazine that publishes poetry, creative nonfiction, “and anything that blurs the lines of those two genres.” Oh, that blurry line! I do wonder what it will look like!

The editors of Sweet, Katherine Riegel and Ira Sukrungruang, say they like work “that lingers in the mouth like an English toffee, work that is challenging and complex like the dark center of a tootsie pop, and work that satisfies like silky smooth Belgian chocolate.” Check out their full list of likes and dislikes, such as Cinnamon disks (gender and sexuality), but not Sugar-flavored sugar drops made with high-fructose corn syrup (clichĂ©s), by clicking here. It’s a great list. I love their analogies!

Sweet plans to launch their inaugural issue in July. Think you have something that fits their parameters? Submit! To read their full guidelines, go here.

But will the writing be about food? Hmm. For all of their sweet talk, we’ll have to wait and see.
